Carney Unveils Crowd-Funded Plan to Restore 24 Sussex Drive
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a crowd-funded initiative to restore 24 Sussex Drive, the historic official prime ministerial residence that has been uninhabitable for over a decade due to extreme neglect, asbestos, and rodent infestations. Estimated to cost over C$100 million, previous leaders avoided using taxpayer money due to poor political optics. Carney’s new plan features a nationwide architecture design competition to modernize the 19th-century building into a sustainable home for future prime ministers, alongside a philanthropic fundraising campaign led by the Rideau Hall Foundation. To maintain transparency, corporate donations are banned, individual caps will be enforced, and the donor registry will be made public, allowing Carney to prioritize public funds for the economy and affordable housing.
